Overall, solid. It took a minimalist approach to mutant powers, which is in contrast to the main series, which often went with the overwhelming visual spectacle approach.

One should complain to Marvel, not the film, for whitewashing Sunspot. They're the ones that have been steadily doing it for the past four decades or so.
Yes, Illyana says make same racial remarks towards Dani. And is called out for it. It is not portrayed in a positive or acceptable light.
Now that that's out of the way, the pacing's good, Boone doesn't mistake gore for horror, and nothing goes overboard. My only complaint (SPOILERISH) would be that I would have done another internal Dani scene in the middle (END SPOILERISH).
The movie didn't try to reach too far, but instead tried to be its own thing, and succeeded in what it set out to do. Not flawlessly, but well enough that I wouldn't mind rewatching.
