I was a student in one of Dr. Dougan's Arkansas History classes at ASU 30 years ago. It was in this course that we were assigned a project. Upon it's completion, Dr. Dougan said, "You can publish this." I had no idea exactly what that meant! I landed in biology and would do research in that area with publications but I always look fondly at the old copy of the journal on my office shelf that contains that first publication. I thank Dr. Dougan for that opportunity. I am also thankful that he poured himself into a study of Arkansas, something that so needed to be done but so few were willing to take on the task. As I prepare to write a short historical piece for the local paper, he and our Odyssey in Arkansas came to mind, and so I write about a very small part of it with a footnote to his class and text.
