Having seen Katherine Ryan in various panel shows as well as her Netflix stand-up specials, upon seeing that she was starring in a new show I decided to have a watch. Being only six episodes long, it didn't take much time for me to watch all of it, and at the end of it I was excited for a new season. Ryan's performance was delightful (despite very little acting experience) and made her character feel all too real (it's almost as if the character named after herself, who is also a single mother that got pregnant at a young age, is based on her own life). Her relationships with her ex-lover Shep and her current boyfriend Evan clashed in hilarious and attention gripping ways. As you would expect from a show written by a well-known stand-up comedian, the jokes were entertaining and usually got an audible chuckle out of me.
However, although I liked the story I definitely felt that Ryan has room to grow as a screenwriter. At times the delivery of some lines were too quick and made the script feel just a bit like a well rehearsed stand-up special and not a natural conversation between two people. I would've liked to see more focus on Katherine's own immaturity, and its affect on the other characters, as well as a larger development of the character, Bev, who feels like a copy-pasted protagonist's best friend character. Using an average American grading scale, I would give this show an 85%, or a solid B. While I believe it's better than what would be expected of a comedy show, it certainly can improve in season two, which from my point of view should be made.
