South of Midnight is a game that starts out strong and keeps going right up until the end. It's beautifully rendered, stop motion style is both unique and fun. The music is fantastic, the storyline even better and the characters! Oh man.
Hazel Flood is impulsive, brash, single minded and strong willed. She has flaws but those are overshadowed by how kind, caring, loving and conpassionate she is. She goes on a heroes journey and instead of making her a one note, plain jane character, they made her feel so real she could hop off screen into the real world and you wouldn't know the difference between her and an IRL human being. And that's only the main character. Anyone who lives in the south would see their friends and neighbors in the residents of Prospero. They put love into everyone they wrote.
This game shines a spotlight what makes the south, the south. From the music that gets you crying, claping your hands and stomping your feet to the creatures that have you feel so much compassion to the lore that anyone in the south would recognize. You explore so many unique areas as Hazel and you come out on the other side of it feeling that much more connected to the people and mythos of the area.
If you love story driven games, absolutely pick this one up. If you love southern gothic games, pick this one up. Actually, Nothing I say can do it justice. Nothing I write can explain how it feels to experience this game for the first time besides awe. Pick it up for yourself so you too can have a million words you want to say about it and only a few to actually explain how you feel.
