The story makes for one of the most egregious sequels I have ever seen. I played the first game and then this one back to back and it seems like these have nothing in common other than the gameplay. The story completley betrays character traits, plotlines, and most importantly potential set up in the first. Ellie and Joel's crumbling relationship after the events of the first game is one of the most interesting and intriguing storylines I can think of. And what do they do with that in this game? They use it for short flashbacks and small soulless moments of hollow emotion into manipulating the player into thinking character actions actually make any sense. Any player can clearly see the game creators political agenda by playing the game, with should not be the case for a game like this. I dont mind female leads or strong females or gay characters, but some of the moments and storybeats feel so shoehorned in just to shove in another message that the game director wants to push.
I was so exited for this game, even knowing what I did about some of the heartwrenching moments. I was incredibly dissapointed.
The only reason this game gets two stars is because objectivley it isnt a terrible game. While lacking a hood story, the game still pulls through visually. It is one of the greatest looking and sounding games I have ever seen. Also the gameplay is serviceable enough, but does get highly repetitive and tedious at the end, and it can get extremely agravating.
I wanted this to be a good game, but the story is nothing but infuriating and depressing, with little justification behind these emotions.
