Ugh.
Where to start? It might just be me, but this movie gives me “can’t make anyone upset” vibes. I wouldn’t say this is for younger children, talks about periods. Maybe it’s the media that has made us more hyper aware of everything racial, but this movie feels as though they HAD to include everyone for the sake of not upsetting people. And it just feels so forced and makes it awkward. I am ALL for representation as I am a poc myself, but this is just forcing it. Too many stereotypes in the movie. Even the boy with a perm and earring? I don’t understand why movies have to incorporate what’s “trending”. It makes it so much more forced. The main character is annoying, and all in all I don’t think this movie is appropriate for children younger than 13. In one line the mother asks her daughter “he did this to you?” And that just doesn’t seem appropriate for a childrens movie. I’m 20 and I still felt VERY uncomfortable and extremely awkward. They’re pushing ideas on CHILDREN. And then the grandpas eyes widening up and then “closing” again? HUH? That was so unnecessary and only plays into stereotypes. I watched 20 minutes of it and that was it. I could not handle it. Do not waste your time.
