Spoilers for the series.
Trollhunters is probably one of the most enjoyable kids shows out there. It’s not a flawless masterpiece but it is really brilliant considering it’s a kids show. On the surface it probably doesn’t look like much but if you give it a chance I bet you’ll love it no matter what your age is. It isn’t extremely childish or super over the top dark but that perfect sweet spot. The youngest age that should watch this is probably 8 years old. I know adults who really enjoy this show. One of the best (if not the best) thing about this show is the world building. The world of Trollmarket in this show is built to perfection. They expand perfectly on the world that is introduced to you in the way that almost all the places that are introduced they go back to and have a purpose. It’s really something you have to see to experience it. The town of Arcadia and Trollmarket aren’t very big but they still have this sense of wonder to them that make it seem big to you. As supposed to the MCU or Star Wars if you were placed in Arcadia and Trollmarket you could find your way around just fine. It just has this sense of familiarity that you just can’t get in other Movies or TV shows. Jumping in It has a very engaging story that will get you hooked and doesn’t disappoint. Season 1 is damn near a perfect kids show and a great show overall. The middle half of season 2 is what you would expect from the show if you were expecting nothing. Trollhunters is a show that works best when it’s following an arc. Some of the worst episodes are the ones that don’t follow a story arc and are just mini adventures. The shows biggest flaw is it’s villains. Gunmar was set up as the main antagonist of the series and at a certain point became the cliched villain who wants the take over the world. They perfectly set him up with a compelling motive (Jim killing his son Bular) but pretty much completely threw that away. Angor Rot is the best written villain in the series and wasn’t even a main villain. Season 1 did best with it’s villains with actual mediocre motives (except Angor Rot) which in the long run didn’t affect how you enjoyed the show. The one thing that is great about the villains is how scary and intimidating they are. The villains‘ character designs are perfect at being cool and scary. The main characters are really the heart of the show. The interactions between all the characters are brilliant and you feel like you’re part of the team, too. The defining characteristic of Jim is Anton Yelchin’s voice. He has this charm and caring voice that you can instantly recognize. Unfortunately he passed and couldn’t finish season 3 which is a real shame because the voice that replaced him didn’t fit. Trollhunters has some really cool concepts that if done well (which almost every time they are) they are really great. Overall this show does not have much build up to the finale except for the last few episodes leading up, but the payoff redeems a lot of the flaws this show has for me. Overall this is an amazing show that I guarantee you will enjoy. It honestly is one of my favourite shows that isn’t afraid to get dark and take risks. If you haven’t watched this show because it’s “too childish” then give it a try. Season 1 for me is pretty close to How to Train Your Dragon 1. I really love this show and I urge you to watch it.
