I rarely come across a book that frustrates me as much as The Pisces. Perhaps it’s just me, but I struggled deeply to connect with Lucy (the protagonist) and her behaviours, decisions, and thought processes. Throughout the story, I found it difficult to emphatise with her, and I often felt more judgmental than engaged. Lucy’s choices seemed reckless and self-destructive, which made it hard to root for her or feel invested in her journey. While I understand that flawed characters are often more realistic and layered, her actions bordered on exhausting rather than compelling. This disconnect just left me feeling detached from the plot most of the time.
And then there’s the ending. Without giving away spoilers, it left me angrier than ever at Lucy and her lack of growth. It felt like the narrative didn’t reward my patience or offer any satisfying resolution, which made the entire experience even more frustrating.
Perhaps this book is meant to challenge the reader or provoke discomfort, but for me, it was one that I struggled to enjoy or even appreciate. While I can see how others might find it raw or unique, it left me feeling disconnected and disappointed.
