I agree with Ian Heine. *Star Trek Discovery* seems to be attempting to reinvent the wheel in order to hook non-Trek viewers. However the producers should remember that the reason *Enterprise* was disliked by so many fans (resulting in its cancellation after only four seasons) is for just that very reason--many viewers felt it played fast and loose with canonicity.
Instead of showing us all of the back-history alluded to by Kirk and Spock in TOS which ultimately led to the formation of the UFP the first three seasons of *Enterprise* tried to reinvent the wheel (that being said it's still one of my favorites) by doing shows about a temporal cold-war, the Xindi, Borg, etc. Thus they had to cram most of the Federation/Starfleet history into one final, fourth season.
Disco may be headed that way as well. For example, why reinvent the look of the Klingons? How do they explain the fact that the Klingons in Disco look decidedly different from the Klingons in both TOS and STTNG? *Enterprise* explained that TOS Klingons were the result of Klingon genetic experiments gone awry. But how will Disco explain their new Klingons? What does this do to the continuity of the various *Star Trek* franchises?
And what's up with the spore drive? The *Discovery* can travel *instantly* from one part of the galaxy to another? Yet the show's set during the Klingon War, ten years before TOS?
And I was *really* disappointed to see that they'd redesigned the look of the original *Enterprise*. DS-9 (another fave) and Ent both featured TOS Constitution Class starships (*Enterprise* and *Defiant*) but to their credit kept TOS design. Apparently the producers of these two franchises felt like some things were too sacred to monkey with: I agree.
There's much about Disco I like, for example, they've captured the spirit of TOS and TNG in ways the recent films just didn't. However it's really hard to get around these three continuity items. IMHO if they'd make the show the long-time fans wanna see and stop trying to change everything they'd be better served. They should be making prequal shows/films like the fan-made *Axanar,* *Star Trek Continues* and *Starship Farragut,* only with bigger budgets and professional actors (no offense to these fan-based shows--they're really good!).
