Not enough vignettes from people to explain how each southern state is different. Some chapters better than others. Great topic- not achieved. It is hard to distill what makes a state unique in our racial and racist society. It was disappointing given the hype.

Interesting story, but not very well written; the dialogue and ruminations from Belle are very stilted. The research is there; the prose is not.
