I loved the first two episodes, as it seemed like maybe we were going to get a show that portrayed black women as people, and not just as fetish-objects for Liberals. Neicy finally washed the stink of "The Rookie" off her career, and was acting instead of posing.
Then the third episode came out, and the cracks began to show. We ended up with scenes of her informing us that her morbidly obese daughter "had a perfect score on the SAT" and then they brought in Taylor Swift's boyfriend to tell Neicy how "beautiful" she is. She's a lot of things, but "beautiful" isn't one of them. At least not on any planet where words still have meaning.
It's been all down hill ever since. The Director seems to just be indulging any random idea that comes into his mind- hey, let's have and extremely long, extremely painful duet from two characters who can't sing. Let's have the nun randomly throwing herself around and literally foaming at the mouth without any explanation.
It's frustrating, because this could have been so much better. It could have been the season of True Detective that we deserved. But it's not. It's just a mash of non-sequitur events, tied together by incredibly vile and graphic scenes of torture, murder, and infants boiling in cooking pots. It gets more incoherent with ever episode- are they in a small town, like they claim? If so, how do they manage to have a community of prostitutes that rivals Las Vegas? Why would keep Neicy on the job, when she's clearly an extreme alcoholic and borderline insane? (Yeah, because of the "She's the only one who can catch the killer" trope.)
Anyway, this review took longer to write than the show is worth. It's probably worth a look as long as you lower your expectations to subterranean levels. But if you want a better show featuring bad acting, graphic violence, and a black savior-figure, watch "From".
