The 5 Bloods released in 2020 tells the story of five Vietnam veterans who hid gold during the war. Several years later, they return to retrieve it, only to face the destructive effects of their greed. I didn’t watch Da 5 Bloods until September 2024, and I must say, it felt particularly relevant given the current state of affairs. The film powerfully depicts the disgraceful way Black Americans, and by extension, many others, are still treated. The portrayal of how greed can destroy lifelong friendships was striking. The ending was phenomenal, highlighting the survival of those who truly care about humanity and helping others. Thanks to Spike Lee for this film—it deserves to be included in our school systems.
