Good movie.
The Google reviews here tell us more about social issues in the movie's background. Google reviewer Gabriella Boyce wrote an internally inconsistent review, starting with "I dislike the movie. It was not funny. but, " which is consistent with her one star rating. After the comma, she went forward with a capital letter: "This film was brilliant. I saw it many years ago and it had a huge impact on my life. The acting is so good." The two sentences did not make sense. I read some more reviews and see that those particular words were written by Ivan Putnam, another Google reviewer three years earlier. Boyce plagiarized. But why?
I've seen the movie. It is not a comedy; it is a drama. I love one star reviews; these are the most pugnacious! But Gabriella Boyce's review was internally incoherent at best and simply flaccid at worst. Did she connect with Kate Jackson's character a bit too closely? I suspect that if Boyce was expecting a comedy, she would indeed be disappointed.
More from Gabriella Boyce: "One of my first gay films where I saw two men kiss. It is still a ground breaker in my life as it made me realize I WASN'T the only boy with feeling for other men. Tender and touching without being overly cheesy. The scenes shot out on Santa Monica Boulevard (streets and alleys) are a trip down memory lane for sure. Remember Machismo and the Four Star Saloon? Great film IMO for many reasons. Hope its available someday on some streaming service!"
Assuming those were all her own words and not plagiarized, Boyce gushed goodies all over the movie, comments that were entirely inconsistent with her one star rating and first line about not liking the movie, because it was not funny. Why bother writing more? Why copy others' comments, including their bad grammar? Again, why bother?
This movie is not hard to find, but purchasers will pay a hefty premium to buy it. (7-10x an average 1980s drama by my spot valuation) I understand Making Love is property of Twentieth Century Fox as of March 2025. Boyce states that she hopes, "its [sic] available someday on some streaming service!" I suspect Boyce will be disappointed. If the owners of the copyright do not publish more, then holders have an item of some value.
