You can't just buy all of the intellectual property, and then have a bunch of generic writers make something up in the style of the original creator.
It is LOTR in name only, and just like so many rehashed IP cash grabs these days, the men are always snivelling wreaks while the women are brave and all knowing. Can't we have both? It's a shame modern story telling has gone from one extreme to another, and it's a shame so many of these companies think they can buy themselves to success with IP's they are utterly incompetent at writing or expanding on.
It's the same with the Star Treks, the Doctor Who's, Star Wars, Hulks, Batman's, etc of the worlds.
They are all writing from the same playbook of attempting to emulate the style of previously successful IP's with huge budgets, and ending up trashing the legacy with expensive and badly written fan fiction, which is utterly and completely reliant upon a spectacle of special effects that if taken away would result in some of the worst intellectually bankrupt products no one would be interested in the slightest.
The true cost to this prequel isn't the billions of dollars wasted, it's the tens of millions of hours of viewer's time they've collectively wasted with the first two episodes the viewer will never get back.
Stop funding this nonsense at once, and either make original and engaging content, or stop producing content all together. Hijacking intellectual property by throwing money at it like confetti does not a good series make, especially when the target audience appears to be the ones now being lambasted for highlighting the terrible decision making and writing which has put you here.
Buying amazon prime goods is now leaving a bitter taste in my mouth as I feel I am funding inadvertently funding this destruction of one of my favourite film and book series regardless. Rather than give prime members added value to their membership fees, we are instead now in the unfortunate position of needing to cancel prime membership as a means of protest which I would rather not do, but what other choice do I have here?
