I went to watch this film without knowing much about it. Took my folks with me and by the end of it, it seemed they enjoyed it a lot more than I did. They're both in their mid-60s, and even though they slept for about 15 minutes during the film, they loved it anyways. I guess, it's got something to do with age, because a group of young people (probably in their 20s/30s) walked out of the theater at the 2-hour mark... and you've no idea how much I wanted to leave with them.
The fact that the movie was directed by an 80-year-old man is evident in every frame of the film. Everything moves so excruciatingly slow, to the point you just want it to end, but it never does. I actually didn't even check the runtime before going in, so imagine my concern when at the 2 hour mark, the plot still crawled at snail's pace without any resolution in sight. Yeah, no surprise some people would rather walk out than waste their time like that.
DeNiro and DiCaprio play their parts decently, but the decision to make them the main characters instead of the Osages, is such a dumb choice that creates a very unlikable film that drags on eternally and makes us weary and tired of watching the same unlikable characters on screen for so much time.
An important story that needed to be told, but not like this.
