The Grift is a powerful, informative book. I just finished reading it and I am impressed. Mr. Cane's observations of how little a student learns about black history in Philadelphia schools is so true. I was raised in the city and taught school there 10 years. I earned degrees at Cheyney Univ. and the University of Pennsylvania. While in high school and in college, I decided to learn as much as possible about black history by reading and visiting places of importance in black history. I learned about Girard college which was being picketed by groups led by Cecil B. Moore. I heard Dr. M.L. King speak at the Baptist Temple at Temple Uni. and regularly read the Phila. Tribune. I left the country and taught more than 3 decades in American schools in Germany. While there, I made sure my students learned about the contributions of black Americans. The Grift should be required reading in all secondary schools. It is well done!
