Without spoiling anything.......I'll say this on behalf of my friends who've already seen the movie:
Good movie. BUT!!! We saw no need for them to be other than IF they were no more than former close/best friends. It would not have changed the spirit of the story/plot if they were instead.
Having said that............WHY?????????
