I wasn't aware of the extent of the theft of Europes artworks until I saw this film. 5 million pieces of art were stolen by the Nazis. It was a real eye-opener and as a result, I did a little reading up [Thanks, as ever, to the splendid Wikipedia for the background]. The Nazis really did want it all and when they realized that they wouldn't achieve this then they were determined that Europe's history would be erased.
The basis of the film is rooted in the true story of the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program (MFAA) which did genuinely rescue artworks and find vast hoards of art salted away by the Nazis destined for Hitlerโs museum project.
'Frank Stokes' (George Clooney) assembles a small team of unlikely heroes (who are in truth ill-equipped for what they will face) to try and recover the priceless works before being destroyed and lost forever as the allied advance was underway. The group of art-experts would be known as 'The Monument Men'
Two scenes that hit home, when they open a barrel and find gold teeth and when one painting is returned to the wall of a home where you know that the owners will never return to. ( Also while looking for a piece of arts, they found Nazi's biggest gold reserver. Over 100 tons of gold).
By the end, they make the movie exciting as theyโre in a race against time to find the art.
It's a film that has to be seen. Maybe not the finest war film ever made, but a very, very interesting one, about an aspect of WW2 most people are not aware of! THE MOVIE IS A WHOLE LOT BETTER THAN MANY CRITIC'S WOULD HAVE YOU BELIEVE. The movie is based on a true WWII chain of events.
