Very much appreciate the myriad references to the game series; I felt like it was Easter with all the Easter eggs littered throughout the movie. Voice cast surpassed my expectations, animation was pure perfection. Only two criticisms:
1. Luigi, not Peach, is kidnapped by Bowser (and most everyone knows why); while just about the only big discrepancy between the movie and the games, this is the whole conflict of the Super Mario series, and it did leave a bit of a bad taste in the mouth since I was expecting the film to stick to the games a tad more.
2. The plot is a bit of an oversight: the entire “Bowser has to be stopped before he destroys the kingdom” is generic and feels like a repaint of a story told by several other movies/books across history. However, if the plot is kept genuine in order to warm the audience up for a sequel, then a basic plot is quite appropriate.
(Ummm… there will be a sequel(s), right? Because this movie is absolute gold, and there’s so much more for Nintendo still to do with this new universe, ie. Give us a fight with Bowser when Kamek turns him giant after you think you’ve beat him!)
Will definitely watch again, and will remember this movie forever.
