This movie ended out a 2/10 for me for a multitude of reasons. First, let’s go over the good.
Why this movie did was explore the darker parts of the Wayne legacy and Bruce himself. To see a movie exploring the story behind the Waynes and the Arkhams was a nice change of pace. The idea behind this movie was there and it was good but…
The bad:
Changing Selina to be Falcone’s daughter wasn’t bad. It was executed a lot better than I expected it to be. Selina’s line of “White privileged men” when talking to Batman about the ones in charge of Gotham was a bit political and a bit too close too home for my liking. This is a comic book movie and to pull that out of nowhere, especially since DC was rarely ever politic-centric was very out of character. Secondly, it took me a second to realize that this was Vicki Vale’s (Lady Arkham) storyarc involving the Arkhams and Waynes and just kinda threw her out and replaced it with the Riddler, who I’ll talk about in a second. Finally, I feel like the characters were really underutilized and as if there’s a specific someone that should’ve been in this movie that wasn’t. Namely Harvey Dent. Harvey Dent’s story begins with him running for mayor and it would’ve made sense for him to be in the place of that woman mayor at the end that kinda…forgettable to the point I don’t even remember her name and don’t feel like looking it up. Having Harvey Dent becoming mayor at the end of the movie and being Gotham’s shining hope would have been MUCH better and more rewarding of an ending to actual DC fans than what we got
The ugly:
A lot of people went through a redesign. Most of which didn’t work. Riddler mainly. Why does he look like that? It’s ridiculous. He doesn’t look imposing, he doesn’t look cool. He just looks funny. Like a bad joke. Also the Batmobile was…just a car. Which isn’t bad but compared to like the last Batmobile from the Dark Knight trilogy, it’s just…lazy. And Bruce Wayne himself. Look, it makes sense that he’s under stress and would have a darker look with edgier hair, but that can only be said AFTER Alfred got injured. To give him this edgy depressed look from the get go is just…really out of tune with anything we’ve ever seen from a Batman story.
The idea was good but the execution was bad
