If you are looking for a Hallmark movie or the cookie cutter rom-com that’s emotional junk food with no substance then this isn’t for you. But if you want to see a beautiful story about the complex feelings we have for those great loves that will always have a hold on your heart, then this is the movie for you. Ignore the bad reviews - especially if they say they walked out at the beginning. It’s not “literal” - they aren’t actually the only two people in the airport — it’s surrealism. The voice on the intercom talking back to them is in their thoughts, and when all the other people seem to disappear it’s because they’ve tuned them out. The music playing in the airport is reminding them of their relationship and who they were before life got in the way. When some reviews complain about it being slow — it does start off a bit slow, but it picks up! Seriously - if you haven’t seen your ex for 25 years you’re not going to jump right back into witty banter. Again - it’s not a cookie cutter Hallmark rom-com movie. Keep in mind that “What Happens Later” is an adaptation of the Steven Dietz play “Shooting Star” - so if it feels a little bit like you’re seeing a play, it’s because you essentially are — but in a realistic setting of an airport and with the magical surrealism of the movies. I LOVED IT - and will be watching it again when it it’s streaming or on DVD.
