I was going to give it 2 stars but I couldn’t do it. Movie came out and I decided to read the book first after hearing the chatter from people.
I think this book is more of a romance novel rather than a DV book. I understand Colleen wrote it emulating her parents relationship. I think Lily’s parents signify that. But Lily and Ryle relationship just looks very favoring of Lily since the beginning. I understand that Colleen tried her best to express the mind of someone who is being abused. Their story line and the psychological conversation they have. Which I think she did okay with Lilys side. Within lily’s thought process. Although if this book is about healing generational trauma then I think she took a wrong turn. I think the psychological pattern is off. And she favored the person in the wrong. Yes she doesn’t deserve abuse but I think this is just another movie/ book that minimizes the story of someone that comes from a DV family instead of speaking for them. She covers a small portion and she delved into the romance. The book was already for Atlas and Lily since the beginning. She just displayed poor decision making from a woman stuck in her past who although is capable of opening her own business at age of 23 in Boston. Lacking a bit of realism psychologically! and also one of the reasons to why DV victims voice won’t be heard since she catered to the sensitivities of the world and tried so hard to romanticize Ryles character. Makes me question if the people are losing their common sense when I see all these good reviews. But I will say hopefully maybe this book is a beginning that allows other artists to bring more truth of what goes on in the house. I hope it’s just a start.
