I read this book because Fosse won the Nobel and because it was the only book by Fosse in our library. I get what Fosse is doing--showing the agony of a paralyzed mind--but the repetitious technique is itself paralyzing for the reader. The third section, however, works well alone as 30-page short story that makes thecsame point as the entire novel.
