I was looking for a great novel to really absorb me and somebody in a book club recommended The Stand. I'm not into reading horror so I'd tended to avoid Stephen King, but the story intrigued me because of it's obviously prophetic undertones given the Covid pandemic. So I got myself a copy of the extended version and settled in for the ride. I'm now 800 pages in and can honestly say that this is one of the best books I've ever read and I now understand why King is one of the most successful writers of all time. Usually I'm someone who reads in the bath for an hour and that's it, but with this one I've been staying up until 3.00 am unable to put it down or go to sleep because I'm still thinking about the story! his characterisation is incredible, the story itself is gripping and it's also surprisingly funny in places. Highly recommended.
