It was an interesting documentary. The bottom line for me is, "Who falls down rabbit holes and why?" Like any existential threat there needs to be a defence and that starts with awareness. Understanding human psychology has become a way for some to divide, control, and manipulate on a massive scale with the help of technology and business models which facilitate it. I suspect that one way to combat the threat is to teach people how to think critically via an adaptation of the scientific method - principled-interest-based-thinking/communication/behaviour. However, basic human nature dictates that individuals will focus on self-interest and that is the core challenge -" How to convince people their best interests are served by working together?" When people create an individualized virtual space for themselves we are all at risk. Education and regulation are keys but it seems clear they will not be enough to prevent some people from falling into a rabbit hole although they represent a start - 'bandaid' solutions. Technology has not created anything new, it has, however, exponentially increased the threat.
