Given the mediocrity of many movies released in recent times. The gruppendenken of hackneyed movie ‘critics’and the inevitable slide of western civilization in the abyss. Napoleon directed by Ridley Scott is a grand movie not without flaws but well worth the lengthy viewing experience. Joachim Phoenix’s role as Bonaparte presents a portrayal of complex character, warts and all, from his rise to to his fall from power. Vanessa Kirby as Josephine is a magnificent foil to her significant other. Their love affair is central to the story of Napoleon according to Ridley Scott’s historical re-creation. Fact and fiction meld together to embellish the Napoleonic story with style and panache. The characterizations of the lesser figures by the supporting actors, costumes, interiors, battle scenes add superbly to the whole movie. The inclusion
of some contemporary selections to the music soundtrack did not fortunately mar the viewing experience as these were mostly used as the credits rolled. Don’t join the flock of deriders see the movie first. Make up your own mind.
