As someone who read the books back in the 90s, I have to say this a straight up butchering of the original text.
It's true, gender swaps, the sex scenes, the genetic blood line cloning of the emperor, characters showing up when they are not suppose to - OMG I can hear the Asimov geeks cringe, whine, cry, and tug in their graves, and, she-sheds and man caves.
With that said, if every great fantasy and sci-fi novel were butchered as exquisitely as this, I would eat them up every, single, time.
The costumes, actresses (especially), actors, filmography, action, music, and the new plot all borrow well from the books and present us with something new but familiar. The idea of Foundation and all its lessons are still here.
Asimov purists will know that the Foundation saga is only one parsec of the larger symphonic galaxy Asimov crafted across his Robot, short stories, and other books.
Knowing that, many have said that a movie/TV adaptation of Foundation would be insanity. If you have read the stories (most likely twice), you would probably agree.
Frankly, the slaughter presented here via Apple TV, though an aesthete beast, only proves that.
Still, I find it worthy. Yes, that's the word - worthy.
