I read the reviews that heralded this show as hilarious and I can't help but feel it can only be friends of the cast and crew leaving such overly generous reviews. Reading further the show is called a breath of fresh air making me question the sanity of both myself and those reviewing it. The writing of the reviews themselves took more creativity to positively spin this show than the writers of the show took to create this mind numbing and robotic gathering of words and cameras. The premise while completely redundant did emerge in a fortuitous time for new content. There was very little competition and by little I mean reruns, reruns or infomercials.
The mainstreaming of ethnically diverse and mixed race families is breaking huge ground in the normally predictable repetitive meta that is network tv. Shows like Black-ish and Fresh off the Boat made huge cultural leaps by sharing an intimate view of everyday life in the traditionally under represented minorities with all of America. This show never truly committed...to anything. The episodes were simply a grouping of unrelated sketches and tired themes. Parenting is hard, kids suck, mother in law interference, these are all building blocks for jokes not the joke itself. To beat those themes alone seems lazy and the laugh track is insulting. The real comedy is derived from the complex solutions that arise to simple problems. I get it, its a sitcom don't overthink it, but there are also standards (or were standards) to getting a show on network television. The problems with this show are numerous and well documented in other reviews they need not be rehashed. It truly felt as though the show was never meant to be aired, but I assume that the global pandemic halting production led to a scramble for any new content and this show was the beneficiary of greatly reduced quality control.
