This movie was appalling. That this movie is an Oscar nominated film is beyond me. And I appreciate different points of view and unique perspectives from people. But I am completely disappointed with the director, actors and writers of this film.
It all felt like a bad dream. The humiliation of Bella throughout led to a much larger denunciation of women as a whole. Instead of lifting and/or “liberating” women it enslaved and violated women with its demented storyline. It wasn’t campy or subversive. It failed miserably as a film that was forcing itself to be something more than what it presumed to be. And it is not a champion of women nor is it a “feminine masterpiece”.
Emma Stone was miscast and came off as ridiculous and victimized. Mark Ruffalo is one of Emma’s lovers. He fingers her knowing she is a creation of Frankenstein. And that she has the brain of a young child in a women’s body seems like pedophilia to me. It was unnerving to see this interaction and other scenes of violation continue to unfold.
The film was a miss in so many ways. And I was looking forward to seeing it based on so many critical reviews.
