I only became certain that this was a le Carre story when I saw the credits. His "Tinker" and "Smiley's People" books are superb, intriguing. However, as I read others, most recently A Perfect Spy, I realized that he genuinely despises Americans, at least their intelligency agencys. It is quite sad that a brilliant novelist can so cavaliarly overlook the contributions this country made in his chosen field, initially espionage, twice saving their British arses, as well as those of other less deserving countries.
