SPOILERS AHEAD:
The only way I can make sense of some of the choices made in this movie is by believing that these two characters are meeting in purgatory (the unidentified airport) on their way to their respective destinations (Duchovny’s trip to “hell,” aka Austin to meet with his Gen Z boss Kevin, and Ryan’s journey to “heaven,” to meet her biological daughter). They meet at this location to gain closure before they’re able to move along. Meg wears a long flowy white dress. There’s an omniscient voice providing pointed instructions to them specifically. There’s Muzak versions of 90’s pop hits that appear periodically in the background (and specifically annoy Duchovny the most). When Ryan tries to give Duchovny her first class ticket, he’s unable to use it. That’s not his destination. She doesn’t get his phone number at the end. I don’t know. If there isn’t a greater meaning to all of those specific choices, then the movie makes no real sense other than to have two former lovers hash out why they didn’t work out and honestly that’s just so boring.
