90% of the time, when somebody says of a movie that one must watch it because of a performance, they mean that the rest of the movie is "meh" but the performance is excellent. Occasionally, though, there is a movie that is above-average with a performance so sublime that it elevates everything onto a much funnier level, but still adds more pathos than it otherwise would have. By all means, everybody should watch this for Peter Ustinov. But it doesn't disappoint on any other levels. And it has a dynamite heist section anchored (ha!) by Ustinov that approaches the tension of Dassin's best work.
