It has a cool idea with the dragons but it really does get repetitive. I enjoyed some of the breaks with lore from different perspectives. The characters are all cringey. You have the tall, dark, brooding, 'dont come into my life, you'll only get hurt' love interest, to the over protected, plot armoured main character who spends most of her time getting hurt and being useless with good intentions. The main love interest and the friend zoned life long friend, a body guard, and now not one, but two dragons who feel they need to protect this 'smart' and 'cunning' so special fragile girl. Never did I see where she was smart and cunning other than reciting books like a robot, if you consider that smart. The plot is predictable. I only minded the sex scenes until the love interest keeps begging her to not fuck him like most of the interactions between violet and xaiden, it got repetitive. To which I just skipped over the whole thing mentally. I too had to look up the author because I felt it was a teen and was shocked. However, I enjoyed the world building. I liked the dragons. I'll probably read the rest because I'm both a masochist and completionist. I actually just started reading a court of thorns and roses and it seems Rebecca yarros just stole the story and added dragons. The character tropes are almost exactly the same, except a court of thorns and roses had a good writer.

This author is bad, she over uses phrases, repeats conversations and scenarios between characters over and over again, and the main characters interactions, thoughts and feelings are so over the top it's exhausting. Definite, obvious plot armor. If she stubbed her toe it wouldn't be, 'my toe throbbed in my boot' it would be ' my toe burned with the heat of a thousand suns, I stopped breathing, focusing on controlling every beat of my pulse to regain control as it threatens to burst from my leathered boot.' it's bad. If they took out every unnecessary, overly explained sex scene and every time her characters say 'fuck', or they repeat in detail the same thing she already described twice over the book size would be reduced by 80%. I do like the frame work of the story, but getting through all the repetitiveness, fucks, prolonged sex scenes, childish interactions between adults, and Saying how smart the main character is without ever showing us anything but how emotionally underdeveloped she is, is rough. But as the horrors persist, so do I. I am two books in, they are free to listen to, so I'll continue for that 20% of the book that actually has substance.

I thoroughly enjoyed the idea and new spin on vampires. I also enjoyed the desolate feeling the ending gave. But I felt like it was just a ton of fads and buzz words thrown into a book. Single mother could of been really cool, but it was just a let down for me. The main character really didn't have any development. I felt a lot of characters had a weird loyalty to her for some reason, that wasn't really warranted. I also felt the final show down also fell flat. But I love the idea of book eaters and mind eaters.
