The deep has a strong opening, and there are moments that are genuinely terrifying like a passage that is a flashback in the main character life which feels very real and would terrify any parent. However, the rest of the book is bland, forgettable, and sometimes even funny when I’m more serious tone would be more appropriate. Nick does a good job of giving you a sense of the main characters state of mind, yet, there are many nights where I felt like reading this book was a chore and part of that was due to Luke’s characterization. I read this book because people touted it scariest books around what was actually scary was how much time I wasted reading something I didn’t really enjoy.
