I'm mixed on the book. On a technical level, the book is sound. It is quite well-written and sophisticated, and this is one of those books where getting the audiobook enhances the experience. Andrew Cuomo is incredible at public speaking and is a master orator much like his father, so him narrating the audiobook showcases his strengths in public speaking. But I dunno, there was something kinda off about this book, I don't know (See the edited version below)
Edit: So I heard about all of the allegations that Governor Cuomo is facing right now, and to be honest, it does not change my assessment of the book all that much, at least on a technical level. Governor Cuomo does have a unique diction that makes him stand out from other politicians who write political memoirs. However, knowing what we do now in terms of both the sexual harassment allegations and the nursing home cover-up does make me dock the star rating because the segment on nursing homes feels far more pretentiously-written and blatantly false than it already was. Before the cover-up was exposed, someone could make the argument that Cuomo was interpreting the situation differently than everyone else did, but after, it's a harder argument to make since the facts (which are important to Cuomo) show he did lie about the numbers. And quite honestly, if people felt scammed out of buying a book from someone that they once looked up to during the pandemic with the sexual harassment allegations, I don't blame them by any stretch of the imagination.
Final thoughts; if you want to get this book to have as a memento of history and something to look back on what happened in New York State from the perspective of its Governor and if you are a fan of the current Governor's diction, go right ahead and get it. However, if you are someone who has a harder time distinguishing the character flaws from the book Cuomo wrote, then the book might not be right for you.
