I saw the first 30, or so, minutes of the film in the 70's when I was little & the movie was still fairly new. Around 2010, I tuned in2 AMC(I think it was) during the last few moments of the film where Burt's sitting outside his old house which was devoid of people & the furniture u'd expect 2 c on the inside of the home. I finally was able 2 c the movie in its entirety on YOUTUBE on my Samsung. From the way I read the tealeaves, Burt's character is under some strong, bad, delusion of some sort. When he finally arrives to his home it's devoid of his wife & daughters which he kept speaking of throughout the movie in previous scenes. It was like reality kicked Burt's character right in the teeth. He's all alone & very distressed in the closing scene. I wish the film had a nicer ending but it seems 2 me that's what the plot of the movie was where he's trying to swim in the mire of the life he's made & not just the various pools he comes across along the way.
