I seriously have no idea why this go such a low rotten tomato score. This was the least deserving movie to get this score among all of the other superhero films from this year and last. Dr Strange Multiverse of Madness, Black Adam, She-Hulk, Ant-Man and the Wasp Quatumania... all of these films were just complete disappointments. Shazam Fury of the Gods? No way. After watching it today, it is now one of my top movies ever seen.
This movie had a consistent tone, great pacing, little to no plot holes, amazing character development and most of all, good cgi. (I’m lookin’ at you shrek-hulk!) My biggest issue with Black Adam was the fact that brought in so many characters and did a terrible job of giving them any sort of direction of an arc and didn’t know who to focus on. Shazam 2 didn’t do that. They chose the top 3 characters that they wanted to develop and stuck with them throughout the whole movie and didn’t try to bombard the audience with unfocused development. The pacing was nice and consistent, they didn’t unnecessarily slow down or speed things up, you didn’t get confused and they didn’t try to throw exposition at you. They tone was light hearted and childish -perfect for this type of movie- but also was able to get emotional with the characters without throwing tone out the window. From a fan of Shazam and have of read some of the comics, they did a nice job of throwing in some comic book Easter eggs.
But what I really want to talk about was the pure excitement and joy of great writing and fan-girling I got from this movie without giving spoilers. One of things I applaud for it was its ability to slow down and get serious with both the characters and the audience without betraying its tone unlike so many other movies do, and bring in so many other jokes that were so worth it. The emotion and the joy of good writing was so overwhelming. Others may fight me on this, and by no means do I believe every single person will love this as much as I did. But as a fan of DC and Marvel, a person in love with superhero films and comic based anything, even if recently they’ve been going downhill, I have to say this is a movie worth seeing. I can’t give you a “guarantee or your money back” kinda deal to see it, but you might love it as much as I did, and if you do, it’s so worth it. As an aspiring writer, this is the kind of awesome books and films I want to make and I’ll praising it for that forever.
