This book has no properly drawn female characters. At all. The two brothers though, are well drawn, and the philosophical questions resonate. Vivid descriptions of disaster. The author's personal war experience allows him to explore heroism and religious life thoughtfully, perhaps cowardice is slightly less imaginatively explored. Surprisingly engrossing.
