I watched this movie before watching the 1948 classic ‘Easter Parade’ and I can’t help but notice the similarities between the two. For example, the scene where Kathy Selden ( Debbie Reynolds) is seen dancing with a pink costume in the beginning where then Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) recognizes her. There is a similar scene in Easter Parade where Hannah Brown (Judy Garland) in the beginning is seen dancing in a pink dress with other dance girls and the main character Don Hewes (Fred Astaire)sees her and wants her to be his dance partner. This is one of many examples I could give but if you watch the two movies side by side you can see the many musical numbers, choreography and even similar song subjects. The thing that strikes me though is to know that Easter Parade came first and Gene Kelly was originally cast to be the main roll but after hurting his ankle he couldn’t be in it so they got Fred Astaire. I don’t know what’s up but it really did surprise me. Especially considering I can’t find anything on the internet where someone else notices this. I just thought it was interesting, not trying to take away any credit from Gene Kelly’s amazing work on a fantastic script considering what he had to work with. Overall a great movie and a timeless classic.
