I love Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and I'll take anything with Wonderland in it because it really means the world to me. So, when I picked up "Unbirthday" I was excited even though it was, of course based off the 1951 movie by Disney, so the source material changed a lot.
And here comes my true, honest review: I absolutely hated this book, and I am personally offended by it. This is where the spoilers begin. First of all, take a shot every time she says "Wonderlandy" because clearly the author KNOWS Wonderland is about nonsense, but doesn't really get it, all she does is comment about how Alice enjoys nonsense etc but there really isn't any nonsense or when there is, it doesn't feel natural. Second, I care not for Alice's waking life, I know she wanted to say something through that plot and I think that it's great, but it doesn't sit well with this story. And hey, even though the Jabberwocky might be overused, I would've preferred that over what she did to The Queen Of Hearts, and here comes my third point, I get that it's a Twisted Tale and I am not bothered by blood or death in books at all, but here it just felt like a twelve year old trying to be edgy, there are so many ways to make a story like ALICE "twisted" without mutilating characters or even killing them! How dare she not explain what happened to the King of Hearts? or just kill off The March Hare and Mary Ann? Did she really not know what to do with them? Don't get me started on Alice not only gettied married but also getting pregnant!! And finally, by the end of the book she answered three questions and two of those weren't even related to Wonderland itself.
I feel like Disney doesn't understand AIW because their Live Action was just as upsetting.
Thanks for reading my review, I've enjoyed Twisted Tales so far, but not this, I hated Unbirthday.
