“A fun, but flawed first entry in a potential animated MK universe.
The animation style is decent, and a lot of the action and gore is fun to watch, but while the pacing is quick, the idea of lumping Scorpion's revenge story along with the main story of the Mortal Kombat tournament, and having the former get a bit more focus is rather jarring, and really shows that while Scorpion is the undeniable poster boy of the franchise, he really does work best as a supporting player within the story.” Quoted from someone else’s review
I highly agree with this and their entire review on the movie focusing on scorpion was a cool idea but in the movie he has probably less screen time or around the same as the three earthrealm fighters. Johnny has no backstory and was just used as comedic relief I play mk so Ik that’s how Johnny is but in this movie the whole “movie” gag was used too long and Johnny didn’t show his full fighting potential until the end of the movie for one scene. Liu Kang obviously is important and scorpion killing goro instead of him took away that. And on top of that, Liu Kang doesn’t even fight Shang Tsung. Now characters obviously there are characters who could be used as minor characters like what they did with Baraka and Reptile but Kitana really she had a two min dialogue seen maybe less with liu Kang and we never see her again they could’ve established something between the two they could be explored in the next movie but no she just walks off. Same with Kano I’m pretty sure he’s dead and he wasnt shown to his full potential and just a henchmen. And finally sub zero nothing is explored with scorpion and sub zero and the clan rivalry or just sub zero and we only saw him at the beginning and then towards the end for a two min scene then scorpion kills him to then learn quan chi was sub zero in the beginning like come on. Being a fan of mk I enjoyed the movie from the references to obviously the x-rays/Krushing blows to the characters but the idea of focusing on both Scorpion’s revenge and the Mortal Kombat tournament to then intertwine them but only focus on the previous less, which is what is being advertised, wasn’t a good idea. I enjoyed the movie I liked the animation, the references, the fight scenes the gory. the problem never lied in the movie itself (if that makes sense) but the title of the movie not reflecting what’s being portrayed as the most important in the move. With the expectation of a scorpion focused movie it was a disappointment, starting off the universe/trilogy/whatever with a movie that focuses on scorpion while trying to build and introduce characters and ideas unfamiliar to those who don’t play the games wasn’t a good idea in my opinion. The movie doesn’t build on characters like Liu, Sonya or Johnny cause they expect the audience to be those who are familiar with the lore and the games but the casual players who don’t care about that stuff and new audiences are just left wondering who these characters are, their drives, their purpose, and clearly their backstories (Sonya got a one min backstory with flashes of different moments which I won’t count) like Johnny we get nothing and from new audiences eyes he’s some cocky washed up stereotypical male action star with a dirty house (I say that last part as a joke but am I wrong). For a introductory movie to a bigger universe it was mediocre and could’ve been better. like I said the idea wasn’t bad the execution could’ve been better the movie was still enjoyable and I’m interested for the next movie.
