This album is one of the most important of the past decade, if not of all time.
When Avicii premiered many songs from it at Ultra 2013 it sent shock waves throughout not only the EDM scene but the Music scene as a whole, people were shocked and many disliked it all together, millions of people called him out afterwards and millions stood by his side, it split the community. Avicii risked his entire career that night, he knew what he was doing, that he was taking a jump and there was a possibility he would fall, yet he stood true to himself (as the album name fittingly states) and released it anyways.
It changed the world, singles such as "Wake Me Up" and "Hey Brother" from the album took the world by storm and ended up revolutionizing an entire industry, he introduced the idea of mixing genres into modern music and created masterpieces that changed peoples perceptions of what not only EDM was and could be, but what all of music could be, he broke down the walls between genres. "Wake Me Up" would go on to be the leading single for the album and mixed elements of Soul, Country and EDM into one song, and it didn't feel forced, it felt smooth and natural, he had done it perfectly. He set a gold standard for innovation with this album.
Every song in it sounds unique and new, and to this day is refreshing even with the countless number of songs trying to be what Avicii's were. He not only made a new sound that everyone tried to then copy and or take ideas from, but he did it so perfectly that to this day no one has done it like him and most likely will never do it like him again, its indescribable.
Nonetheless the album holds strong today and will forever stand the test of time, its an iconic album in the EDM world and its effects are still being heard to this day, the soul filled vocals mixed with the complex melodies of guitar and piano spiced with the haunting sound of synths and other arranged sounds will forever be remembered for not only its sound, but its impact. "True" would go on to be certified 14x platinum worldwide and its lead single "Wake Me Up" would end up making history many times over in numerous regards.
You cant overstate the importance of this album and the man behind it.
