I saw this in my 20s and don’t really remember anything about it from then. But over time it gained this reputation as a sort of young revolutionary movie and in the spirit of the times— Bush, Iraq, antiwar and antigovernment — I sort of remembered it as an Occupy Wall St-like peoples’ movement movie. But on second watch 17 years later, it’s a melodramatic noir super hero movie but with a cinematograph-ic mismatch, and a script that is just not good. And which is very cringe-y in a January 6 insurrection / active shooter manifesto kind of way, with an undercurrent of creepy smart-dominant man / submissive helpless woman / Stockholm syndrome romance. How weird.
