I was so looking forward to this live action remake. The original was my favorite Disney film growing up. This new remake, however, leaves much to be desired. The acting, overall, is incredibly flat. Mulan has no real foils; in the animated version Mushu, Crickey and the horse not only are foils but comedic relief. The movie feels monotonous in pacing. I understand much of the movie needed to change and was excited to see how the story would evolve. Ultimately, I was disappointed that many things that could have stayed the same were weakened when changed. The additional “witch” and the bit about “Qi” and magic, I thought debased the whole story. The emperor and the surrounding cast was lacking. I gave Mulan two stars because I was really looking forward to it but if I’m being honest it really should have only gotten one star. It’s too bad; the script was incredibly weak and was then surrounded by weak actors.
