Nothing endearing or enjoyable about this movie. It was hard to tell what was a day dream sequence and what was reality. Things that seemed like reality were full of disrespect and examples of horrible behavior. His complete escape from anything in the real world is not an example of imaginative play because he never turned it off. Kids can play and have fun without letting it affect how they treat and interact with the world around them. He was obviously suffering from missing his dad, which was eluded to but never addressed. It made me feel sad for Timmy because he was constantly trying to avoid missing his dad and feeing abandoned. I didn’t read the books- seems like people who have read the books, have a stronger attachment to the character and story. The only part I liked were the kids who accepted Timmy regardless of his horrible behavior and disrespect. They treated him with kindness and understanding. A few adults were also truly doing their best to help him make positive changes in his life. You could tell at the end he was opening up to the idea of “evolving” and taking ownership of his bad decisions, but it was too subtle and too late - kids watching would not notice the transition. I do not recommend this movie unless you have read the books.
