To be honest, I did enjoy it enough to not give one star. And I was all about the hype. I preordered, I jumped on the train. I was excited for a massive gore fest based around a demon ripping badass. And got an arcade game based off what felt like more of a quake clone instead. Overall disappointed. Defiantly fell short of Doom 2016. The backgrounds, albeit, massive and ambition, lacked detail. The “pickups” probably set me off the most. aside from the terrible finishers, the melee was nerfed. I actually was not able to punch the lowest tier enemy to death let alone an imp, or hell, a pinky. There wasn’t even an infinite ammo pistol in a game that your base melee does no damage. I’m sure this was to make the chainsaw more useful but I found myself in the scenario every fight. At least early game, I waste all my ammo on the commonplace wanders and have little to no ammo for the bigger enemy’s. They try to balance it by putting more chainsaw fuel around but it makes it too tedious when it focuses on the faster “quake” movement. The enemy’s honestly felt both better and worse. I live how they mimic the players movement and especially the aracnotrons. But beside the aracnotrons, they all feel underdone. Maybe it’s due to the finishers not turning them into a strawberry tapioca pudding. But it feels all the things they changed were the things I loved in 2016.
