It's backstory both in terms of the original family and the time spent in the movie setting the scene gave the scariness credibility; yes, there was a bit too much predictable possession-in-movie but that didn't take much away from the engagement. The scary movie parts cohered well with the storyline and characters - who I totally fell for. Nice acting!
