The Mother was so good, Jennifer Lopez did all her own stunt training throughout the entirety of this film. Her portrayal of the role exhibits remarkable range, bringing purpose and depth to every scene. Even though Gael GarcÃa Bernal had a smaller part in his role, it was a masterclass in acting. Lucy Paez (The daughter), a star is born.
The dialogue in the final scenes struck a deep emotional chord and beautifully brought together the theme of a mother's unwavering love for her child. This movie breaks new ground, particularly in Hollywood, by featuring a female led action star as the lead and having a female director behind the camera, providing a fresh perspective through the female gaze.
I give this movie a 4.5/5 because additional backstory would have been useful to create heightened impact and clarity between the characters. I would have added a few more flashback scenes throughout the movie of the antagonists to accentuate the stakes in the present for the audience.
Overall a great action-packed high octane thriller!
