A lot of people already touched on a few of these topics. I feel Prey was well executed. The story is very well developed along with the characters. The original, for me, always set the standard. The special effects and sounds were very organic in nature for the 1987, Predator.
The fight scenes were very well choreographed for all the characters involved. This also showed the Predator had worthy adversaries to be matched with the Comanches. Prey also celebrates and pays homage to a couple of the past Predator movies of the franchise. Small spoiler hint...can you spot the prop weapon that's from one of the final scenes of Predator 2?
The film develops the details of the main character, Naru, beautifully along with her brother Taabe. There is some sibling rivalry between the two along with presenting a gender challenge with Naru amongst her tribe. This is portrayed with wonderful cheeky dialogue between a brother and sister. Ultimately, what is also shown is a sense of respect, love, and understanding. These two are some B.A. warriors to boot. Acting and script is top-notch. You get a quick sense of who everyone is without a burden of deciphering something that's too over-developed.
I cannot overemphasize the choreography enough. With Prey, the Predator's abilities are fully visualized and fleshed out. With the previous films, I feel there was a lot of cutting and splicing with fight sequences - simply because film effects were just not "there" yet. This is not the case with Prey. Special effects, A++.
The cinematography was also brilliant. This is the first Predator movie where I felt that the Predator had overall dimension into what this creature is. This is due to its screen time and editing with amazing presentation through the camera lens. It's a bit of a slow burn leading up to the climatic Predator screen presence, but done perfectly.
I finished the movie with a feeling of "wow." It left an impression to me as an audience that this may be one of the best movies I have seen in the past couple of years. And I watch A LOT of movies. I feel Prey can be enjoyed by anyone that is not a movie nerd of the Predator franchise. My perception: it's a stunning movie all around with some great action, amazing story, and a little gore that's known throughout this series!
