The film is completely devoid of the spirit of Napoleon, which is palpable when you read his biography or see his paintings. It doesn't resemble his being in anyway and instead the film is more of a parody of the legend.
Where is his Charisma? Where is the dash , the suave and bravado? Where is the passion, and his God like cunning and ingenuity? We see nothing, but just a broken guy who fights a number of battles.
When I am watching the movie I am thinking - who is this guy? It's clearly not Napoleon.
Hegel called Napoleon a 'World Spirit'. Just reading or hearing about Napoleon is enough to raise one's soul to heights of greatness. Like it's very hard to not feel a deep sense of reverence upon hearing the real life legend. Just read his quote , " Impossible is a word found in the dictionary of fools." Chills.....
And yet the movie strips everything good that is about the Napoleonic Legend. It has completely missed the point of the entire Napoleon story.
Napoleon's story is a story that is inspirational like no other. Like that is a truly truly heroic story of - courage, love, patriotism, ingenuity, talent, daring and so on.
But the movie? It seems Ridley made an attempt to tarnish the story of Napoleon. It is not inspiring, not rousing, doesn't give a sense of what true greatness looks like. So basically, the movie has failed. Which means, the work still continues .
There still remains a dire need to create an awesome biopic, or a series about Napoleon Bonaparte, imparting the essence of his being. It's really sad to know that many people will be misled by the movie, and will not have the authentic , life changing experience that the story of Napoleon has to offer.
